What a film script is

Film scripts are the skeletons of films; they are different from a novel or from any other text which has peculiar style and content characteristics.

That's why writing a film script is quite different from writing a novel or a story. It requires a great capability of synthesizing and of selecting.

Synthesis is used in fact to learn how to describe what is happening in a scene, rather than to narrate a story. Selection is used to understand what in a story may be functional inside a scene.

As film script is divided in scenes, it is the scene itself which creates the images' rythm and in the whole, it builds up the series of events.

The description of feelings, the style technique, the form, are elements to be forgotten.

The only thing which really counts, is what you do see and what you do say.

Through dialogue you create a suspense, you add information and you carry out the story. While, through the physical description of the scene surroundings, you create the atmosphere, the place and the type of society you want to describe.

Writing a script, therefore, doesn’t mean sticking to some fixed rules in the technical format of the written text, but learning a new technique and a new way to communicate.

Writing a good script is the challenge you must accept when you find a new fiction; the proof is reading the script and understanding how could it have been reading the novel itself.
