Purpose of prefaces and back covers
Prefaces and back covers are two components of a book. Prefaces have the aim of presenting, clarifying, and deepening some aspects of a book, but they are not necessary components. Not all novels need them and they are usually used by already known authors who want to recall previous publications or particular awards they received along their career. In many other occasions prefaces have a precise function: in a scientific text, for example, prefaces help to highlight, after a brief author's biography, the kind of work, the instruments employed and the technical difficulties undertaken to complete it. Back covers instead are a must in any book. Back covers are very important elements for the text: they are the first approach to the reader's interest, a sort of introduction to a work and they must be the most intriguing publicity messages. Back covers have the important function to let the readers knowing which kind of text they will be reading, but furthermore they have the aim of fascinating, making them curious and interested. The communication type adopted to write back covers needs some specific characteristics: it must be short, not bothering, discrete (as communicating doesn't mean reveal) and fluid, as words must enchant but not reveal their own secrets. Writing good back covers means giving the book the possibility of being chosen and being bought.
