Who a proofreader is
Often, when somebody writes a novel or any other writing, she/he has not the time or the critical capability of checking it again, with patience and peace of mind, to correct all the mistakes of her/his writings. If this procedure is not carried out before the submitting of a work to the publisher, it leads the latter to correct a text which, perhaps, is full of grammatical and syntactical mistakes or repetitions of words, or of paragraphs, or of some episodes, or anything else. These mistakes are often interpreted as obvious forgetfulness, they are evident signs of carelessness for a book and they determine sometimes its failure. When a book is submitted to the publisher, the manuscript is switched over to the “readers” who may decree its life or its death. If writings are submitted full of mistakes, the publisher has an enormous extra work to correct them. This extra work has to be done before submitting any writing. Publishers frequently put apart manuscripts full of mistakes for a later eventual use of them, preferring to publish manuscripts easier to read and without any mistake. The proofreader's work is that of averting the book to be put apart. Correcting the style to its best and avoiding grammatical mistakes is the first requirement for good writings to be easily accepted.
